One Up, One
Down
Number of Players:
5 - 10
"One up, one
down" works best with a large group of drinkers arranged
in either a circle or semi-circle with one person acting
as an MC of sorts. The rules are pretty simple, figuring
them out can be difficult & often there is an moment of
epiphany where you realize how the rules work. (Then again,
some people will never figure them out, probably from drinking
too much as a result of losing.) In any case, the MC must
already know the rules (and is usually the one who starts
play). The MC moves around the circle calling out the name
of a participant. He/she then asks "One up, one down?" The
player has a choice of 3 different answers: a. one UP, one
DOWN, b. two UP, or, c. two DOWN. Depending on the position
of their own arms their response will be right or wrong.
If the person has both arms in a "down" position they must
answer "two down" or take a gulp of their beverage. If they
have both arms up the correct answer is "two up". If they
have one arm up and one arm down then they must answer "one
up, one down". Play continues around the circle for as long
as the players like or until everyone is zonked. The key
here is, of course, that the rules are NEVER explained to
any participants that can’t figure them out. The MC simply
waits for the current player to answer and if the answer
is wrong they order them to drink.
